this is such a depressing statistic: there are 2.3 million people being housed in jail in our country right now. (we have more incarcerated people than any other country in the world) and it's costing us 60 billion dollars a year to take care of them.
this is so ass backwards! why aren't we spending 60 billion dollars a year to support parenthood education, to fight child abuse, and drug abuse, and family violence---all the things that turn children into people who end up locked up because they've never developed the ability to cope in ways that aren't destructive to self and society.
we are a sad bunch. we treasure "stuff" but throw away people.
